First off...I'm the kind of guy that actually likes to read owner manuals. But the information in the manuals about disassemble and reassemble for cleaning sucks. I have 4 pistols and 1 revolver.
Taurus PT1911
Ruger P90
Ruger LCP
SW 99OL
SW 642
I sell ice cream for a living...so here is my proposal...spend some time with me going over disassemble, cleaning and reassembly of my 4 pistols and I will fill up your freezer with ice cream. Anybody in the SW metro interested?

I have found the same to be true for me also. But I learn 'easier' from watching (and following along, step-by-step), rather than reading and trying to decipher what I read.
I did some searching on YouTube and found disassembly/reassembly/cleaning videos for each firearm I own, bookmarked each one and watch them regularly (while practicing). Some day I'll copy them and burn them to a dvd.
Granted, they're not the manufacturers videos, but the ones I found, follow the instruction manuals pretty close.
I also found several complete troubleshooting guides online and printed them out for future reference. I keep them in a .50 cal ammo can (in a 1 gallon zip-lock bag), along with my 'gun tools'.

If you're close to me I'd be glad to help. I have a couple of those guns, and I'm pretty intuitive mechanically. Plus, I've got about a dozen handguns of different makes and models.
PM me if ya want.

Count me in, if needed.
Perhaps an open class on cleaning and care, attended by many? Perhaps at the next GRG?

Check youtube, you should find pretty good videos on how to clean your weapons.
Taking apart the 1911 is pretty easy. Any youtube video can show you how to do that. Make sure you follow the 4 rules though.
The hard part is lubing it correctly. This video shows how to properly lubricate your 1911 and explains the differences between grease and oil. I am sure others here will have different opinions, I'd like to hear them too.

Firefox has an extension to download You Tube videos in flash format.
http://lifehacker.com/software/exclusiv ... 319925.php
I use VLC to watch them:

be aware of the urls super imposed on some videos. Had a student in class point out that the url on the DEA agent video was from a pretty unsavory site... NSFW for sure!

Looks like you have enough tips for now so I want to ask you or anyone else a question.
How do you like the Taurus PT1911? I have a few guns from Taurus and like them and the 1911 looks like a good gun for a good price' How much does a model like yours cost?
It's a step up from the Charles Daly 1911 that I have.
Thanks - nice gun collection.

The PT1911 is probably the best gun Taurus has made so far.

I like My PT1911. The barrel link was too narrow for the gap it was in (between the "ears" holding it) and thus it eventually bound up. Eventually defined as ~5000 rounds into it. HammAr from the other site helped me with a new link and pin and 1911Fan helped me when I bent one of the "ears" ... but other than that, it has great features for what I paid for it and shoots very well.
At its current price, I might look at something from Springfield Armory as being slightly more gun for the money.

Para has also just entered the market with a basic 1911 near the $500 price point. Looks and feels really nice.
