I'm sick of the rich and the powerful getting to live by a different standard. When they have to live and die by the same laws as the rest of us, I'll object a bit less to their attempts to disarm me.
There's an angle.
"So, just because you're a big muckity-muck you get special exceptions? I thought we were promoting being an everyday person. An everyday person with the right to "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" - hard to have any of those when you live in fear of being robbed, raped, or worse.
Plus, its more efficient & effective than increasing the police force.
