I came across this site and thought many of you might find it interesting. Real world tests of how much velocity you lose as you shorten the barrel. It covers most common handgun calibers. http://ballisticsbytheinch.com/

That is very cool. As somebody who carries a short barreled .357, I'm very interested in this ongoing debate. I still want to buy a chronograph.

I've got a chrono, you know one day when this white stuff is melted and you can stand to be outside we should work up a chrono day for guys to come and try what they want.
One rule, you shoot it(the chrono) you bought it! Actually saw that done once, not pretty.

Hmmm. Very interesting. The .357 clearly outperforms the .38 special (big surprise there! ) but at 2" and 3" the .357 and 9mm seem to be about equivalent. Only at 4" does the .357 have clear superiority. It would seem that a 9mm snubby would give virtually nothing up to a .357, velocity-wise! I've always kind of wondered about that.

tangent: Charter arms is going to release a 9mm Charter Arms Rimless Revolver in the first Qtr of 2009. It will shoot 9mm without moon clips by way of a spring loaded clip in the ejector star. (terminology?)
hmmm... a 9mm service pistol and a 9mm revolver as Backup. Ammunition compatibility.
