Post subject:  Jan. 5 -- buzz from the state capitol

DFL to take advantage of the financial crisis to screw gun owners.

Not "gun control" but revenue enhancement. Only reason for it is that there is a financial crisis and "we need the money."

Raise permit fees to outrageous amount and reintroduce partial discretion. Here's how.

* $100 fee for 5-year OCCUPATIONAL & NEED permits. Sheriff decides who qualifies.

* $500-1000 fee for 5-year PERSONAL PROTECTION permits. Maybe per year payable in advance ($2500-5000). Objective criteria unchanged.

See, it just a revenue measure.

Here is where we need to use the liberal agenda. We need to make sure that the politicians know that raising the permit fees will be discrimatory against poor people. Do politicians really not care about the welfare of poor people? Do they want to put poor people in danger by raising the fees beyond the poor's ability to pay?

Make those metrocrats look colder and harder than Scrooge the day before Christmas.

Modest proposal for revenue measure: require all POST-licensed persons to maintain a MN Permit to Carry to maintain POST eligibility. Should add a couple of million to the state's coffers every year.

The police unions have pretty much guaranteed that training and license fees are paid by the agencies - or your tax dollars.

Sure. And I think that in this time of stressful budgets, the pain needs to be shared -- just like the wealth, and all -- and I'm sure that could be arranged, if there's sufficient political will.
