I'm reminded of a line from the movie "The Sound of Music" when the little girl innocently asks, "why does the red flag with the black spider make everyone so upset"?

I found a very interesting website about the swastika. It indicates that the Nazis did use the "good" version. Overall an interesting read.

That said, another incident that smells a little bit to me.

Attempted Assault and a Bias-Motivated/Hate Crime Incident

At 7:15 p.m., Friday, December 14, 2007, a female student walked north across the bridge over University Drive South. On the north side she walked past three white males. One of the males spat at her without hitting her. There was no additional contact between the victim and the subjects who continued to walk away from her. The victim could not provide any further description of any of the suspects.

At 7:20 p.m., while walking north between the Performing Arts Center and the Atwood Memorial Center, this same female student walked past two different white males. One of the two males presented a raised arm salute that the victim reported to be a “Nazi salute.” There was no additional interaction between suspects and the victim. The victim and suspects continued walking in opposite directions.

These incidents constitute a threat to the safety of our students and the security of our campus community and are hurtful to our entire educational community. Everyone is encouraged to be vigilant concerning campus and individual security.

something doesn't seem right, just doesnt add up, two different set of people doing things? I dont like to blame the victim, but Public Safety should give more information on those flyers then that.

Hate crime/bias-motivated marking/writing on-campus

At 8:40 a.m., Thursday, December 27, 2007, Public Safety received a report that a small swastika with the name “Hitler” under the symbol had been drawn on an inside wall of the west elevator in W. W. Details such as size and color of the symbol and writing, writing style of the name and exact location of this symbol and writing within the elevator are not being released as such detail may be of value in the on-going investigation of this incident.

This drawing and writing constitutes a threat to the safety of our students, the security of our campus community and is hurtful to our entire educational community. Everyone is encouraged to be vigilant concerning campus and individual security.

I personally found that final comment to be kind of disgusting. I have to take my gun off to go about my day on campu, rely on someone who isn't even present to "protect" me and they call that "safe and free." Thanks a lot.
