One Good Pocket Holster
There are others. I like this one, and the new holster that I just got from Kevin for my J-frame revolver is just right for me.

Pocket holsters don't get the press, or the attention, they deserve. It's a simple concept — a pocket holster is simply a pouch of stiff leather that holds a handgun upright in a pocket. They work with any but the most tight-fitting pants — and in coats, as well. They're also reasonably priced, generally; the K & D pocket holster that I just got runs about $50.

What's particularly good about them is concealment. Yes, I know, that in Minnesota, "conceal & carry" is a misnomer; in Minnesota, anywhere it's lawful to carry concealed, its lawful to carry openly. But there are good arguments for carrying concealed — among others, it avoids the problem of some hysteric seeing a gun in a belt holster and having a fit. It also makes it very difficult for criminals. Part of the benefit of "shall issue" laws is that criminals have to worry about the fact that they don't know who is legally armed, and will tend to, in many cases (not, by any means, all cases) substitute property crime for violent crime, or just move to states where, because of old-style, bureaucrats-know-best carry laws, law-abiding citizens common practice, can't get permits.

In a threatening situation, somebody with a pistol on his or her belt holster has to make the decision to draw it very early, or the gun will never get into the hand. That's not just my opinion; Bill Jordan, the legendary border patrolman, who was repeatedly timed as being able to go from a bell to an accurate shot in .270 seconds, used to say that. If Jordan felt the way, the rest of us are going to be in even worse shape if we count on some sort of theoretical fast draw.

A pocket holster helps with that. In a situation where you feel concerned, you just slip your hand into your pocket, and acquire a firm grip on the handgun. It doesn't look threatening — although, if you want to choose to look threatening, to persuade somebody you're asking to move away to actually do that, it shouldn't be difficult.

All in all, a pocket holster is a useful piece of equipment in terms of carrying a handgun safely, and stay out of trouble. Get one.

I also very much like the Milt Sparks Pocket Holster for Revolvers, and the Galco pocket holster. Inexpensive, solidly-built, and very useful.
